Love Your Body Month Recap

February’s Love Your Body Month 2008 was a great success thanks to Kris Shock who over-saw the entire month’s activities, the many volunteers who stepped up to host and help out with events, and the hundreds of people who showed up to participate!  Thank you to this year’s media partner Star94 radio for letting your listeners know about LYBM and Merrick’s Walk!

Some highlights:
Cosy Sheridan’s performance of "The Pomegranate Seed" at Kennesaw College was a huge hit with audience members.

Our Candlelight Vigil at the GA State Capitol featured beautiful singing and powerful words by representative Karla Drenner, Miss Atlanta, Caitlin Andrews, and music by Leanne and Emily Allen.

Movement, dance and yoga workshops, and numerous panel discussions took place around Atlanta, educating and informing attendees about eating disorder warning signs, the recovery process and how to support a loved one.

Leslie Lipton, author of Unwell spoke at South Forsyth High School and Georgia Tech, and inspired students at both campuses to become activitsts for the cause!

Grade school children at Pace Academy and Warren Jackson Elementary were treated to Love Your Body Week.  These programs got rave reviews from parents, teachers and kids alike!

Numerous middle and high school clubs hosted awareness events on their campuses during Love Your Body Week.

Merrick’s Walk featured a new Fun Run, and was hosted by former Star94 DJ Tom Sullivan.  Despite the gloomy weather, the crowds showed up in force, and we were thrilled to see more parents with young children in attendance, which supports our mission of PREVENTING eating disorders before they start.

If you attended a LYBM event and would like to give us feedback about it, please contact kris@MyEdin.org.  We’d love your input to help us make plans for next year’s month of activities.

EDIN NEWS!

NEW EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR JOINS THE TEAM!
On January 1, EDIN named Marisa Goodwin as EDIN’s new full time Executive Director.
Marisa most recently served as the Annual Fund Manager for MedShare International, a non-profit organization located in Decatur, Georgia, where she helped secure sponsorships and raise funds to help the medically underserved globally.

“It was a privilege to be a part of the MedShare community, but I was ready to use my skills to help those whose lives and well-being are at an immediate risk from disordered eating behaviors,” said Marisa. “I was also interested in working with an organization that provides prevention education and awareness for a disease which is misunderstood and under-served.  I knew of EDIN and was so impressed with the work that they do, and the commitment of their staff.”

Marisa will primarily facilitate EDIN’s growth process so that EDIN can expand the scope of people it serves in the Atlanta, statewide and national community. As a former EDIN board member, Marisa is familiar with EDIN’s mission as well as the challenges that EDIN faces in a diet-oriented culture and a tight economy.  She will be involved in every aspect of managing the organization, from re-designing the website to marketing and PR, from fundraising to board development.

“We are thrilled to have Marisa join EDIN in this major capacity.  She is an outgoing and energetic person who brings a great deal of knowledge to this issue,” states Dina Zeckhausen, EDIN’s Founder.  “Her successful history in fundraising and nonprofit management is a great asset to EDIN at this important time of growth.  I am very excited about EDIN’s potential with Marisa at the helm.  I am grateful to all of those whose support these past few years has allowed us to arrive at this exciting chapter!”

Prior to her position at MedShare, Marisa served as a Fundraising Consultant for O’Neill & Associates.  Her fundraising career started in 2003 when she began working in the Development Office for AIDSAthens in Athens, Georgia.  Marisa has both a BA in Secondary Education and a MA in Public Administration/Nonprofit Management from the University of Georgia. She is active in the Association for Fundraising Professionals (AFP) and serves as a working Board Member for the Dana & Doug Smith Cancer Assistance Fund.

Welcome Aboard, Marisa!  If you have any questions about Marisa’s vision for EDIN or want to help us make it happen, please e-mail her at Marisa@MyEdin.org!

Our Beyond the Looking Glass Gala on October 21 was a great success.  The Biltmore Ballrooms served as a lovely backdrop as our 250 guests enjoyed a seated dinner, fabulous music and an entertaining Live and Silent auction.  Speakers included CBS reporter and EDIN Board member, Jennifer Mayerle who spoke about losing her best friend to anorexia.  EDIN founder Dina Zeckhausen spoke about how EDIN’s prevention programs are unique in that they empower Moms, teens and people in recovery to make change happen.  Kris Shock, Program Director talked about her journey from a woman who had struggled with a 19 year battle with an eating disorder to an activist and a mother who is stopping the cycle with her own daughter.  Mother and activist Sydney Shipps spoke about how the MOD Squad principles had changed the way that the family approaches food and the fears of motehr raising girls in today’s media-saturated culture.  South Forsyth High School English teacher, Matthew Thompson, shared stories from the front lines of a group of high school students who are making a difference with their LULA (Luv Ur Life Always) club.

Thank you to our Sponsors for the event: Laureate Eating Disorders Program, Magnolia Creek, The Renfrew Center, Ridgeview Institute, Project E Clothing, Novare Events, Carolina House, Seyfarth Shaw, Timberline Knolls, Atlanta Center for Eating Disorders, Center for Change, Remuda Ranch, THRIVE!
